Choose Yourself: Review

Honestly, I don’t normally sit down with a book by the fire and read. I typically like to read online, mostly because it’s convenient and I connect better. So in a rare reading choose yourself reviewevent, I plowed through the book “Choose Yourself” by James Altucher. Who is James Altucher? As he states in the inside flap of the book…”James is a successful entrepreneur, chess master, investor and writer.” He’s also started and run many companies and has been involved extensively in the financial community.

The book starts off with a forward by Dick Costolo, the CEO of Twitter where he says there is exciting news.”We can choose the life we want for ourselves. You choose that life by doing the best you can right in this moment.”

The premise of the book is, despite wild ups and downs in life you can choose to be happy, make millions and live the dream. He then sets out to explain how it can be done, if you “Choose Yourself”. James does have a quirky writing style and it’s sometime tough to follow where he’s going but there is some sage advice flowing through this book.

Now I don’t want to reveal too much but here are some highlights that struck me:

  • Build Your Foundation: Physical, Emotional, Mental & Spiritual

  • Establish a simple daily practice that incorporates the above foundation

  • Identify and write down who you are

  • Help People get what they want

  • Be a connector

  • Finally, on page 100 there is some of the simplest, best advice I’ve ever come across!

There are a lot of people out there giving advice and telling you what to do. My take on advice is that it’s a lot like going to a yard sale…there’s often a lot of junk but every now then you find the proverbial diamond in the rough. Everyone is different and responds uniquely to what life puts in front of them. This book does have some treasures reveled here, as is usually the question: Will you Choose Yourself and seize your opportunities?
